Determining the inheritance of agronomic traits in chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Bento,Cíntia S; Rodrigues,Rosana; Sudré,Cláudia P; Medeiros,Artur M; Mathias,Vinícius AS; Gonçalves,Leandro SA.
ABSTRACT The Capsicum genus is widely studied in many countries but most of research focuses on C. annuum. Although its importance as potential genetic resource for breeding to disease resistance and fruit quality, studies on genetics and breeding in C. baccatum var. pendulum are still scarce and it still remains as an underexploited crop. This paper aimed to study the inheritance of agronomic characteristics, to estimate the genetic parameters for seven agronomic traits in C. baccatum var. pendulum, using generation mean analysis and to verify the existence of major genes and polygenes with additive and non-additive effects, using the method of maximum likelihood with the aid of Monogen software. The agronomic traits evaluated were: number of fruits per...

Genetic parameters and simultaneous selection using traits of ornamental interest in pepper plants Horticultura Brasileira
Acevedo,Ana Karolina de OS; Medeiros,Artur M; Barroso,Priscila A; Costa,Gérson do N; Lopes,Angela CA; Gomes,Regina Lucia F.
ABSTRACT Pepper plants of the genus Capsicum are widely grown worldwide. The Capsicum annuum species shows ornamental potential; nevertheless, in the state of Piauí, there has been a lack of studies on its performance, related to quality traits needed to meet market demand. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and associations between traits of ornamental interest in C. annuum in order to indicate, by simultaneous selection of traits, accessions to start an ornamental pepper breeding program in Piauí. We evaluated 16 accessions of C. annuum under plastic house conditions at Universidade Federal do Piauí. Number of days to flowering, number of days to fruit maturation, plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit persistence,...

Non-parametric indexes in selecting hybrids of chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Medeiros,Artur M; Rodrigues,Rosana; Costa,Daniele V; Pimenta,Samy; Oliveira,Jurandi G.
ABSTRACT On Solanaceae, the use of hybrids in seed market has been consolidated in recent decades, especially for sweet pepper and tomato crops. However, other crops such as chili peppers (Capsicum spp.) are still neglected by breeding programs which aim to obtain hybrids. The objectives of this work were to evaluate experimental chili pepper hybrids dedo-de-moça (C. baccatum var. pendulum) in relation to production and quality of fruits in two growing seasons and to compare non-parametric selection indexes based on these aspects. Eight chili pepper genotypes were evaluated, being three experimental hybrids (HP03, HP04 and HP08), three lineages (PIM01, PIM02 and PIM03) and two commercial cultivars as controls (‘BRS Mari’ and ‘Ibirajá’), under field...

Protecting vegetable cultivars in Brazil: a chili pepper case-study research Horticultura Brasileira
Pimenta,Samy; Rodrigues,Rosana; Sudré,Cláudia P; Moraes,João GT; Bento,Cíntia S; Medeiros,Artur M.
ABSTRACT: In all countries, members of the UPOV (Union Internationale pour la Protection des Obtentions Végétales), of which Brazil is a signatory, to protect a new plant variety is necessary to carry out DUS (Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability) tests. DUS testing forCapsicum spp. is based on 48 descriptors, which involve qualitative and quantitative traits, observed from germination to fruit harvest. This paper describes the performance of DUS tests on lines of chili peppers, which are candidates for protection; we discuss the main aspects related to operational difficulties, the relevance of some descriptors for the protection process and highlight the importance of protecting new plant varieties as national intellectual property. Four C. annuum...
